MELAKA, May 9 (Bernama) -- The government is implementing several initiatives to help media companies remain operational, says Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
He said among them was a collaboration with Google through Project Sigma to experiment with new methods of content delivery for younger readers and viewers.
“This is today’s reality, where the younger generation may no longer read newspapers or watch television at specific times, but information reaches them anytime and in any form.
“And the biggest challenge is monetisation… so I believe this is among the matters we will discuss (in conjunction with the National Journalists’ Day celebration),” he said when met by reporters after presenting a contribution from Tabung Kasih@HAWANA to former Melaka Hari Ini editor-in-chief Ishak Mohamed Salleh, 65, who is facing health challenges, at his residence in Taman Bukit Cheng here today.
Also present were Communications Ministry Deputy Secretary-General (Strategic Communications and Creative Industry) Nik Kamaruzaman Nik Husin and Bernama Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj.
Fahmi said the government was not only listening to ideas from media companies but would also assist in the transition process to further strengthen the role of journalists.
“We need to find a business model that can also generate returns for media companies to ensure employment in this sector remains secure,” he said.
