MELAKA, May 9 (Bernama) -- Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil presented a contribution from the Tabung Kasih@HAWANA fund to former Melaka Hari Ini editor-in-chief Ishak Mohamed Salleh during a visit to his residence here today.
The National Journalists’ Day (HAWANA) 2026 Secretariat said in a statement that Ishak, 65, who headed Melaka Hari Ini for 18 years until 2018, is currently facing health challenges, including diabetes and a nerve-related illness that has caused loss of sensation on the right side of his body.
“The Tabung Kasih@HAWANA, introduced in April 2023, has benefited 740 media practitioners nationwide.
“This initiative reflects the MADANI government’s continued commitment to safeguarding the welfare of the media community, particularly those in need,” the statement said.
The initiative is implemented by the Communications Ministry through the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) and was launched in conjunction with HAWANA 2023.
Also present during the visit were Communications Ministry Deputy Secretary-General (Strategic Communications and Creative Industry) Nik Kamaruzaman Nik Husin and Bernama Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj.
Meanwhile, Fahmi said the Ministry of Communications and Bernama always took the opportunity to extend contributions and assistance to families of media practitioners in need.
“This provides us with the opportunity not only to strengthen ties, but hopefully to help boost the spirits of veterans to continue with their lives while reminiscing and reflecting on their efforts in the field of journalism.
Meanwhile, Ishak said he felt appreciated by the contribution extended through Tabung Kasih@HAWANA.
“In the past, journalists were not looked upon, but with efforts like these, we feel appreciated, and young journalists will see that this career is valued by all parties,” he said.
