Sarawak Delta Geopark Recognised As UNESCO Global Geopark

KUCHING, April 28 (Bernama) -- The 3,112-square-kilometre Sarawak Delta Geopark has been officially endorsed as a UNESCO Global Geopark. 

Forest Department Sarawak, in a statement today, said this recognition marks a significant milestone in Sarawak’s efforts to preserve its unique geological, ecological and cultural heritage while promoting sustainable tourism and community development.

“The certificate presentation ceremony was held on April 27, 2026 in the UNESCO Headquarters, Paris. Sarawak Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh represented Sarawak and led the Sarawak delegation to receive the certificate.

“The certificate was presented by Kristof Vandenberghe, chief of the Section for Earth Sciences and Geoparks UNESCO,” it said.

UNESCO Global Geoparks are single, unified geographical areas where sites and landscapes of international geological significance are managed with a holistic concept of protection, education and sustainable development.

It said the achievement reflects years of dedicated collaboration among local communities, government agencies, researchers and conservation partners, who have worked tirelessly to protect, conserve and promote the Sarawak Delta.

“Their collective efforts have ensured that the Sarawak Delta is not only protected but also sustainably managed for future generations. It reflects the strength, commitment and partnerships between communities, scientists and policymakers in achieving a shared vision.

“The recognition places Sarawak on the global map and Sarawak will benefit from increased global visibility, fostering responsible tourism that supports local economies without compromising environmental integrity,” it said.
