Machang Moral Rehabilitation Centre Prospect Memorises Quran Within Short Period

20/04/2026 10:22 PM

MACHANG, April 20 (Bernama) -- Sekolah Tahfiz al-Quran al-Furqan, established in 2023 at the Machang Moral Rehabilitation Centre under the Kelantan Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIK), has produced two hafiz who memorised all 30 juz of the Quran within a short timeframe.

MAIK president Tengku Tan Sri Datuk Mohamad Rizam Tengku Abdul Aziz said the accomplishment reflected the institution’s success in nurturing hafiz among its prospects, or known as mujahid.

He said the achievement not only aided their rehabilitation process but also created opportunities for them to reintegrate into society and contribute positively.

“More encouragingly, one of the mujahid has been selected as a recipient of the Huffaz al-Quran MAIK incentive for 2026,” he said at the Khatam Perdana Hafazan al-Quran ceremony of Sekolah Tahfiz al-Quran al-Furqan here today.

The programme, funded through MAIK zakat funds and Wakaf Sultan Mansor, provides an incentive of RM7,200 per year, or RM600 per month, and offers recipients the opportunity to lead muraja’ah programmes at selected mosques across Kelantan.

Mohamad Rizam said the incentive recipients also took on mentoring roles, guiding fellow prospects in the learning and memorisation of the Quran at the rehabilitation centre.

He said MAIK remained committed to continuing the tahfiz programme by recruiting new mujahid to meet the target of 30 participants per session, despite constraints such as short detention periods and parole orders.

“Participants are also placed at selected mosques to continue their memorisation,” he said, adding that MAIK had previously channelled RM122,234 to the Kelantan Prisons Department to provide more conducive tahfiz facilities.

Meanwhile, being behind bars did not hinder a 36-year-old prospect, who wished to be known only as Mohammad, from becoming a hafiz after successfully memorising all 30 juz of the Quran in a short period.

He said his life underwent a complete transformation after he began serving his sentence at the Machang Moral Rehabilitation Centre under Section 376 of the Penal Code in September 2023.

Mohammad said the opportunity to take part in MAIK’s tahfiz programme was a life-changing turning point in his life.

“I had never thought of becoming a hafiz before. But with strict daily memorisation routine, I managed to complete all 30 juz in one year and eight months,” said the Huffaz al-Quran MAIK incentive recipient.

Mohammad said his success had also reshaped his family’s perception, especially his father, who now takes great pride in having two hafiz in the family.

He said his background as an educator and his command of the Arabic language helped him memorise faster, in addition to enabling him to guide fellow prospects in improving their reading and memorisation.

Mohammad, who is due for release in 2029, said he aspires to pursue a full-time career as a Quran teacher.

Another prospect, Ahmad, 34, said he previously could not read the Quran but has since managed to memorise nine juz after taking part in the same programme.

The father of one said he began learning from the basics and maintained a high level of discipline, including waking up as early as 4.30 am to pray and revise his memorisation, as he is determined to memorise all 30 juz before his release in two years.
