KOTA BHARU, April 9 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) of Kelantan foiled an attempt to smuggle over two tons of subsidised cooking oil into a neighbouring country through an integrated operation along Jalan Bypass, Pasir Puteh, today.
It said the operation, conducted by the personnel from the Pasir Puteh Police Headquarters and the Pengkalan Kubor Region 3 Marine Police Team, led to the arrest of three men and the seizure of two vehicles.
"Two vehicles, a Proton Exora and a Naza Citra, were detected carrying subsidised cooking oil believed to be intended for smuggling abroad.
"Upon inspection, the team seized 2,805 kilogrammes (kg) of subsidised packet cooking oil, with the total value of the seizures estimated at RM32,012.50, including the vehicles,” it said in a statement today.
The KPDN said the subsidised items were stored in temporary transit houses before being taken to the border for smuggling purposes.
"The syndicate hid the boxes containing the cooking oil behind black cloths to evade detection by authorities, but the team managed to find them during the operation, which was carried out at about 7.45 am,” it added.
It said that the case is being investigated under Section 21 of the Control of Supplies Act 1961, while the arrests were made under Section 10 of the same act, with investigations ongoing to track down the syndicate network and the mastermind.
