KUALA LUMPUR, April 9 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association has advised all parties to refrain from issuing statements that could mislead the public, particularly on the global energy crisis and rising oil prices.
Its chief activist Datuk Nadzim Johan said statements issued without clear factual support would only add to public unease, particularly amid the flood of false information and the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) content on social media.
“(As the opposition), they are carrying out their duties, but these must be based on clear facts. Otherwise, when will this issue be resolved? Ultimately, the people are the ones left confused.
“We hope the opposition performs its duties with clear ethics and proper considerations,” he said when contacted by Bernama today.
He was commenting on PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang’s statement yesterday, reminding Muslims in the country not to be misled by various claims, including regarding an increase in oil prices, which he said was baseless.
The Marang MP said there was no solid justification for raising oil prices in the peninsula, as the country has its own petroleum resources and was not involved in sanctions against Iran or disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
Nadzim said the government should enhance its communication strategies to ensure people have access to timely information, which would help prevent the spread of fake news.
He also expressed concern over a few traders who have taken advantage of rising fuel costs to increase the prices of essential goods.
Nadzim further said the public must make a cultural shift toward prudent consumption, including in daily use of water and electricity, while also minimising food waste.
