Works Ministry To Enhance AI Use In Monitoring, Managing High-risk Slopes - Ahmad

03/04/2026 01:49 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, April 3 (Bernama) -- The Works Ministry plans to step up the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor and manage high-risk slopes nationwide more systematically and effectively.

Its Deputy Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Maslan, said the move is in line with current needs to ensure that public infrastructure safety remains at an optimal level.

“Some technology-related initiatives have already been implemented, including the introduction of a Slope Early Warning System to help detect changes in slopes in real time.

“AI technology is among the plans currently being refined and will be presented for consideration. We will evaluate all proposals and subsequently implement the latest technologies, including AI, in the management of slopes nationwide,” he said after officiating the pre-launch of the International Conference on Slope 2026 (ICOS 2026) here today.

ICOS 2026 will bring together industry players, government institutions and slope experts from various countries, including Norway, India, Hong Kong and Japan, and will be held on April 29-30 in the capital.

Ahmad said the ministry has also developed the Integrated Slope Management System (ISMAS), which will be enhanced with AI elements to improve its efficiency.

“ISMAS has been in use for some time, but the addition of AI technology will help in predictive analysis and proactive maintenance, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of slope management,” he said.

He added that to date, a total of 34,633 slopes along federal roads nationwide have been recorded, with about 10 per cent identified as high-risk and closely monitored by the authorities.

“Although slopes classified as high-risk are marked as red zones, the level of risk remains under control and depends on factors such as weather conditions and ground movement,” he said.

He also said that various mitigation methods are being implemented, including soil nailing techniques, vegetation planting, and the installation of specialised materials such as slope protective mats to strengthen slope structures.
