PUTRAJAYA, April 3 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating 17 individuals for allegedly spreading false information on fuel price hikes and new electricity tariffs that have gone viral on social media platforms.
It said that, to date, statements have been recorded from eight individuals, including in five cases involving false posts related to fuel price hikes.
"Of the five cases, statements from three suspects were recorded earlier, while the remaining two were recorded yesterday.
"There are also three cases involving the new electricity tariffs. The remaining nine suspects are still under further monitoring and will be called in to have their statements recorded soon," it said in a statement today.
The investigation is being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), which provides for a maximum fine of RM500,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both, upon conviction, it said.
MCMC stressed that it views seriously any misuse of social media platforms intended to mislead the public through the dissemination of false information.
"The spread of such false information can create panic and anxiety among the public," it said.
It added that stern action would be taken against any individual found to have violated existing laws.
