KUALA LUMPUR, March 26 (Bernama) -- Guangdong recently kicked off a grassroots basketball tournament aimed at showcasing local talent and deepening community participation in sport, with tickets for the opening game sold quickly.
The inaugural 2026 Guangdong Provincial City Basketball Association tournament, known as Guangdong B.A., opened on March 21 at Guangzhou’s Tianhe Sports Center, where Zhongshan defeated host city Guangzhou in the first match, according to a statement.
Exclusively for amateur players aged 16 to 40, the Guangdong B.A. gives local community athletes a chance to compete, as professional players are not allowed.
Organisers say the league also aims to boost local consumption and regional tourism, incorporating cultural elements from across Guangdong.
Basketball has deep roots in the province, dating back to the late Qing dynasty, and Guangdong later became home to the Guangdong Southern Tigers, one of the most successful teams in the Chinese Basketball Association.
The Guangdong B.A. will run through August with 125 games. A provincial football league is scheduled to begin late next month, featuring over 120 matches through October, alongside planned food promotions and consumer events.
