KUALA LUMPUR, March 20 (Bernama) -- Happiness must be redefined as a shared responsibility anchored in resilience, compassion and collective well-being, said Alliance for a Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.
He said happiness is not merely an individual pursuit, but a common aspiration that can be nurtured through empathy, justice and a strong sense of community.
In a statement in conjunction with the International Day of Happiness 2026, he noted that this year’s observance comes at a time of mounting global challenges, including conflicts, economic uncertainty, rising cost of living, climate change and growing mental health concerns.
“These realities weigh heavily on individuals, families and communities, affecting not only livelihoods but also emotional and psychological well-being.
“True happiness lies in knowing that we are not alone; that we care for one another, support the vulnerable, and build communities grounded in empathy and trust,” he said.
He stressed that prioritising mental health must be a key focus, adding that seeking help should never be seen as a weakness, while stigma surrounding mental health issues must be addressed.
He also called for stronger social cohesion through acts of kindness, volunteerism and community engagement to restore hope and connection among people.
Lee said promoting fairness and inclusivity remains crucial, noting that inequality and injustice are major barriers to achieving a harmonious society.
Sustainable living must be embraced, as protecting the environment is essential to safeguarding the well-being of future generations, he added.
“Finally, we must cultivate gratitude and mindfulness in our daily lives. Even in difficult times, finding meaning in small acts and simple moments can help us stay grounded and hopeful,” he said.
