18/03/2026 08:33 AM

KOTA KINABALU, March 18 (Bernama) -- Shopee Malaysia (Shopee) has reiterated its commitment to online safety and consumer education, emphasising the importance of helping the public identify fraudulent tactics.

Shopee said its proactive measures include educating the public on protecting personal information and ensuring transactions are conducted only through trusted digital channels.

"As more Malaysians join the digital economy, efforts to raise awareness about online safety help consumers shop and transact with greater confidence.

“Creating a safe digital environment requires collaboration between the government, platforms, and consumers," the e-commerce platform said in a statement today.

Through continuous consumer education efforts, Shopee aims to equip the community with practical knowledge to repel common scam tactics, it added.

This includes advising consumers to remain vigilant against suspicious interactions and adopt safer online shopping habits, Shopee said.

The company highlighted these initiatives the 2026 National Consumer Day celebration organised by the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry  (KPDN) last Sunday (March 15).

At the event, which was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Shopee engaged directly with the public on safe shopping practices through exhibitions and public sharing sessions.

Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali also visited the Shopee booth, where the team shared their consumer education efforts to help Malaysians better identify scam tactics and adopt safer online shopping habits.

Shopee also provided practical guides on how consumers can protect themselves, including skills to identify suspicious website links and impersonation attempts.

Consumers are also prohibited from complying with payment requests made outside official platforms and are reminded never to disclose sensitive information, such as one-time passwords (OTP) or banking details.

"Always be wary of scam tactics that exploit elements of urgency, impersonation, and requests for off-platform payments," Shopee advised consumers.

Meanwhile, Shopee Malaysia Head of External Affairs Nik Emir Din said consumer education remains the most vital element in building public confidence in the digital economy.

"At Shopee, we are committed to supporting initiatives that help people identify scam tactics, protect their personal information, and transact more securely through trusted channels.

“We welcome the opportunity to further reinforce this message through platforms such as National Consumer Day," he said.

The exhibition also helped consumers understand the function of official affiliate links within the Shopee ecosystem.
