Taylor’s University Advances Global Learning Through Leadership Engagement

KUALA LUMPUR, March 9 (Bernama) -- The appointment of the President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, José Ramos-Horta as an Honorary Adjunct Professor at Taylor’s University marked a significant milestone in the institution’s commitment to integrating real-world leadership and global perspectives into its academic ecosystem.

The President, who is widely recognised for his lifelong advocacy for peace, democracy and human rights, engaged students from the Bachelor in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) (Honours) programme during an academic dialogue session titled “A World Adrift – New World Order”.

Ramos-Horta highlighted the critical role of education in shaping future leaders capable of navigating global challenges.

“Education is one of the most powerful instruments we have to shape a more just, compassionate and peaceful world. In this critical moment for humanity, nurturing critical thinking, ethical leadership and a global outlook is not only necessary - it is urgent,” he said.

According to Taylor’s University, the dialogue provided students with a first-hand opportunity to engage directly with a sitting head of state, with discussions centred on ASEAN dynamics, Timor-Leste’s evolving regional role, and the broader responsibilities of global leadership - an experience many described as transformative.

Semester Two student, Lee Yong Zi said the session reframed her understanding of leadership and global engagement.

“His (President Ramos-Horta) call for ‘more scientists, not social scientists’ pushed me to see leadership not only as diplomacy or vision, but as the tangible work of turning ideas into realities people can live in.

“Engaging with a real-world leader through a university platform felt surreal — it turned a high-profile dialogue into a personal conversation and showed that Taylor’s University doesn’t just teach global engagement, it lets you live it,” she said.

Meanwhile, Semester One student Sri Krishna Anuj Saripalli said the session broadened his view of ASEAN’s political landscape.

“Hearing President Ramos-Horta speak about Timor-Leste’s struggle for recognition highlighted how smaller nations can shape regional conversations, not through economic or military power, but through moral authority and principled leadership,” he said.

Programme director Dr Deboshree Ghosh said such engagements offer PPE students invaluable exposure beyond theoretical learning.

“His Excellency gives students a chance to understand how peacebuilding, ethics, diplomacy, and decision-making operate in real-world contexts. This exposure provides a depth of learning that cannot be achieved through textbooks alone,” she said

The appointment also marked the launch of the President J. Ramos-Horta Scholarship, aimed at supporting a deserving Timorese student with strong academic merit and a commitment to global impact.

Taylor’s University said the initiative reinforces its dedication to accessible, high-quality education, aligning with the interdisciplinary philosophy of its PPE programme and its broader mission.

Taylor’s University welcomes applications for its 2026 intakes, offering PPE Exclusive Scholarships with up to 100 per cent coverage on tuition fees. Prospective students may also learn more at Taylor’s Open Days on March 14 and 15, or visit here for further information.
