KUANTAN, March 9 (Bernama) -- The Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, and Tengku Ampuan Pahang Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah have conveyed their condolences to the family of Royal Professor Tan Sri Dr Syed Muhammad Naquib Al‑Attas, who passed away yesterday.
In a Facebook post, the royal couple prayed that the late scholar’s soul would be placed among the faithful and the righteous.
“Their Royal Highnesses also expressed hope that all matters concerning his family would be eased and that they would remain strong in facing the loss of their loved one,” the post read.
The post described the late scholar as a distinguished intellectual who made immense contributions to knowledge and was widely recognised as the pioneer of the concept of the Islamisation of knowledge, which significantly influenced the development of modern Islamic educational thought internationally.
Throughout his academic career, Syed Muhammad Naquib produced dozens of scholarly works across fields including philosophy, history, theology, literature and Islamic civilisation.
Among his most influential works are Islam and Secularism, The Concept of Education in Islam and Prolegomena to the Metaphysics of Islam, all of which remain important references for scholars worldwide.
The Pahang Sultanate also noted that his major contributions to advancing the Islamic intellectual tradition and strengthening Malay-Islamic discourse made him one of the region’s most influential thinkers.
Syed Muhammad Naquib, founder and former director of the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilisation (ISTAC), died at 6.47 pm yesterday.
His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, conferred the title of Royal Professor on the late scholar in October 2024, in recognition of his contributions to the country, particularly in the field of Islamic education.
Royal Professor is the highest and most esteemed professorship in Malaysia, bestowed by the King.
