KUALA LUMPUR, March 2 (Bernama) -- Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City (SMC) has retained its position as Malaysia’s number one hospital in the Newsweek World’s Best Hospitals 2026 ranking.

In the latest global standings, SMC climbed to 138th place worldwide, up from 193rd in 2025 and 233rd in 2024, while continuing to lead as the country’s highest-ranked hospital.

“We are honoured to be recognised in Newsweek’s World’s Best Hospitals 2026 and proud to be ranked top in Malaysia once again. This achievement is a testament to the dedication of our doctors, nurses, and colleagues across the organisation, and the trust placed in us by patients and partners locally and internationally.

“We remain committed to strengthening clinical governance, advancing patient safety and experience, and continuing to invest in capabilities that support consistent, high-quality care for the communities we serve,” he was quoted as saying in a statement issued by SMC.

According to a statement, more than 2,500 hospitals were evaluated from over 200,000 healthcare institutions worldwide under the programme, encompassing public, teaching, university and private hospitals.

Only the top 250 hospitals are featured in the published global list.

Among globally renowned institutions listed are Mayo Clinic - Rochester, University Health Network - Toronto General Hospital, Cleveland Clinic, the Johns Hopkins Hospital and Singapore General Hospital.

The evaluation is based on a rigorous multi-source methodology, including peer recommendations from a global survey of more than 100,000 medical experts, patient experience data, hospital quality metrics and Statista’s Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) survey.

As the flagship hospital of the group, SMC is home to over 300 resident medical consultants and provides comprehensive care across more than 80 medical specialties and 28 Centres of Excellence.

With the completion of its sixth block, Tower F (Children’s Pavilion), the hospital will expand beyond 1,000 beds, supported by a multidisciplinary team focused on delivering integrated and personalised care.

SMC is also Malaysia’s first private hospital to attain three major hospital-wide accreditations - the Joint Commission International (JCI) Gold Seal of Approval from the United States, the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS) International, and the Malaysian Society for Quality in Health (MSQH) - underscoring its commitment to internationally recognised standards of quality and patient safety, the statement read.

Published annually by Newsweek in partnership with Statista, a global market research and consumer data firm, the World’s Best Hospitals ranking evaluates leading healthcare institutions across major healthcare systems, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan.
