KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 26 (Bernama) -- Enforcement action taken by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) against the stall for the Street Dakwah programme in Bukit Bintang was not linked to preaching activities, but was due to public complaints over the installation of a canopy.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh said DBKL enforcement officers had visited the site to assess the situation, including allegations of vandalism.
She added that DBKL officers had waited for about 30 minutes at the location after receiving the complaint, but no representative came forward before further action was taken.
“The seized items, such as folding chairs, tables, canopy and trolley, have since been reclaimed by Multiracial Reverted Muslims (MRM). No religious materials were confiscated by DBKL,” she said when replying to a supplementary question from Datuk Seri Dr Shahidan Kassim (PN-Arau) during the Minister’s Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat today.
Hannah said sentiments stirred by certain parties following the incident had affected DBKL officers on duty that day.
She said one officer faced harassment on his Facebook account, which left him so distressed that he had to deactivate it.
“This saddens me because of the many perceptions being created, which should not happen.
“When enforcement officers receive complaints, they must go on the ground and carry out their responsibilities without fear. As civil servants, they are carrying out their duties honestly,” she said.
In this regard, Hannah advised all parties to refrain from making defamatory claims.
Meanwhile, she said the Federal Territories Department consistently supports dakwah efforts, but these must comply with regulations set by the authorities.
On guidelines for dakwah activities, she said DBKL will work with relevant agencies, particularly the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia and the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department.
