KUALA NERUS, Feb 24 (Bernama) -- A newly described fish parasite species, Thelohanellus borkhanuddini, has been named in honour of a scientist from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT).

UMT said in a statement today that the recognition was given to former head of the UMT Marine Biology Programme, Assoc Prof Dr Hafiz Borkhanuddin, for his dedication and contributions to fish parasitology and invertebrate ecology.

It said the new species in the genus Thelohanellus was discovered by researchers in Hungary and published in the international journal Aquaculture Reports.

“The discovery is not only a taxonomic achievement but also carries direct implications for the health of farmed fish, the productivity of the aquaculture industry, and the sustainability of global aquatic protein resources, particularly in addressing food security challenges.

“The naming of a new species in scientific taxonomy represents a high and enduring academic honour, as the name will continue to be recorded in the scientific literature as long as the species is recognised by the international research community,” the statement added.
