MADANI Government Strengthens MMEA With Additional Assets

15/02/2026 02:49 PM

MIRI, Feb 15 (Bernama) -- The MADANI government continues to strengthen the operational capabilities of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) through the addition of strategic assets to enhance the security of the country's waters, particularly in Sarawak and the South China Sea.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah said the first Turkiye-made Multi Purpose Mission Ship (MPMS) is expected to be delivered in mid-2027, while four Agusta AW189 helicopters will be received in stages from this July.

"The first vessel will be stationed in Sarawak, while another will be placed on the East Coast of the Peninsula,” he told reporters after the launch of the MMEA's 21st anniversary celebration and opening of the Miri Maritime Zone Complex here today.

He said the helicopters will be stationed in Sabah, adding that the placement of these assets was made after taking into account security aspects, operational needs and the threat level in these areas.

At the end of last year, the MMEA also received the ex-United States Coast Guard (USCG) cutter, Cutter Steadfast, from the United States Coast Guard (USCG) to enhance long-range patrol capabilities and continuous operations in the country’s waters.

He said the additional air and sea assets will enhance the MMEA's surveillance, emergency response and search and rescue (SAR) capabilities, as well as strengthen maritime law enforcement.

"This reflects the government's continued commitment to ensuring the security and sovereignty of the country's waters are constantly preserved,” he said.

The assets are expected to elevate the MMEA's readiness in tackling security threats, cross-border criminal activities and protect national interests in strategic waters, particularly in the South China Sea.

Shamsul Anuar, who was representing Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, also officiated the opening of the Miri Maritime Zone Complex, which cost RM118.3 million under the 11th Malaysia Plan (Second Rolling Plan).

The complex comprises a modern administration building, operations jetty, 95 residential quarters and other support facilities.
