TANAH MERAH, Jan 27 (Bernama) -- Visitors to the recent AgroMADANI Sale programme at the grounds of the Lanas Jedok Farmers Organisation Authority (FAO) office snapped up 230 kilogrammes (kg) of beef within a mere three hours.
Nor Asima Ghazali, 43, a livestock breeder under the Peladangnita programme expressed surprise at the extraordinary response, relating how she and her husband, Mohd Johan Mustapha, 43, had only slaughtered one cow to be sold to visitors when their stall opened at 8.30 am.
When the over-110 kg of beef from the first cow was sold out in a short time, Nor Asima said her husband decided to slaughter another cow that yielded about 120 kg of beef for sale.
“I sold the beef, bones, stomach and liver at RM20 per kg compared to the normal current market price between RM25 and RM35 a kg,” she told Bernama recently.
The livestock breeder from Kampung Lawang said she signed up for the AgroMADANI Sale to help people to buy necessities at lower prices and to take the opportunity of selling direct to consumers.
“This is my first time being involved in such a sale. It is fun to see the local community’s response coming to buy beef at cheap prices.
“Profit and loss are part of doing business, but what’s more important today, I am selling to help people with the intention of doing charity,” she added.
Local resident, Hassan Mat Soh, 55, said the sale programme helped villagers reduce expenses on daily items, especially for those with uncertain incomes.
“Most villagers here work as construction workers, rubber tappers or farmers. This programme does help us save on our monthly expenses.
“I hope more agencies work together with traders to organise such sales in the future,” he said.
Meanwhile, Lanas Jedok FAO general manager Mohd Harmie Nipa said the AgroMADANI Sale programme was a government initiative under the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry via the FAO to reduce the cost of living for Malaysians by improving the agrofood supply chain.
“The AgroMADANI Sale at Lanas Jedok FAO is the fourth in two years and the first for 2026. This programme involves the sale of fresh produce such as vegetables, fruits, chicken, fish and beef as well as other agricultural-based products,” he said, adding that visitors save about 10 to 30 per cent compared to local market prices for selected products.
“Participants include FAO members, Lanas Jedok Peladangnita and Peladangmuda groups,” he added.
