KANGAR, Jan 25 (Bernama) -- The two-day Perlis Squid Jigging Festival 2026, which began yesterday, has the potential of becoming a new tourism product in the state and will be continued as an annual event, thereby strengthening the tourism sector in Perlis.
Perlis Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah said the festival being held for the first time also serves as the opening event for the Perlis Tourism Event Calendar 2026, in conjunction with Visit Perlis Year 2024-2026.
“This festival involves nearly 100 participants and sees the participation of over 50 fishing boats. It will provide the public with the opportunity to experience squid catching activities, which are rarely organised in this state," he told reporters after closing the festival in Kuala Perlis near here today.
Abu Bakar said the organisation of the festival was not just a recreational event, but also a platform to promote the heritage of coastal life, the culture of the fishing community, and the natural beauty of Perlis to the general public.
"Although this inaugural event still has some limitations, including in terms of promotion, the response received has been very encouraging and will be improved to ensure it can grow as a seasonal tourist attraction," he also said.
