MCIS Life Launches ‘100 Native Tree Species In Malaysia’ Book To Strengthen ESG Commitment

17/01/2026 02:12 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 17 (Bernama) -- MCIS Insurance Bhd (MCIS Life) has launched a landmark publication, 100 Native Tree Species in Malaysia, as part of its environmental, social and governance (ESG) commitment to promote environmental education and conservation awareness.

Developed in collaboration with the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM), the book forms a key component of MCIS Life’s sustainability framework, translating decades of botanical research into accessible knowledge for students, educators and the wider public.

MCIS Life chairman Mohammad Nizar Idris said the publication reflects the insurer’s belief that environmental protection must be grounded in education and understanding.

He said the company’s sustainable business practices focus on developing internal sustainability policies while raising awareness among employees and stakeholders associated with the organisation.

“As a life insurance company, we are fundamentally concerned with the health and well-being of our policyholders.

“Our involvement in tree planting across the country is part of our contribution to addressing climate change, and this has been ongoing for several years,” he said in his speech at the book launch held at Taman Botani Kepong here today.

Also present were FRIM director-general Datuk Dr Ismail Parlan and MCIS Life chief executive officer Prasheem Sebran.

Mohammad Nizar said trees play an indirect but important role in the life insurance industry as they contribute to a healthy environment that supports the long-term well-being of the population.

“People may be wondering, why should a life insurance company focus on trees? This is because environmental health is a key factor in life insurance risk management and risk assessment.

“We believe that long-term environmental protection is strengthened when action is supported by understanding. When we educate children early about the value of trees, we shape hearts and minds and grow a future that protects our planet,” he said.

Mohammad Nizar added that the collaboration with FRIM ensures the publication meets high scientific standards, making it a valuable reference for schools and policymakers.

The book launch also forms part of MCIS Life’s integrated, system-based sustainability approach anchored on three core pillars -- Understanding, Action and Access -- with the publication representing the Understanding pillar by providing a scientific foundation and raising conservation awareness.

The book will be produced in a limited print run for educational use and complemented by a digital edition to broaden access while minimising environmental impact.

Copies of the book, together with educational materials, will be distributed to selected schools, reinforcing the company’s belief that early education is a critical lever for long-term behavioural change.
