Saberkas Plays Key Role As Catalyst For Unity, Youth Development In Sarawak

SIBU, Jan 8 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak United National Youth Organisation (Saberkas) plays a vital role as a catalyst for unity and multi-racial youth development in Sarawak through grassroots engagement and ongoing community involvement.

Its president Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the organisation remains committed to engaging members at the branch level after each major meeting, ensuring youth voices are heard and programmes address local needs.

“Over the past year, Saberkas organised 310 activities across Sarawak, with programmes held nearly every weekend. This demonstrates the organisation’s strong presence at both zonal and branch levels,” he said at the Hi-Tea Programme with Saberkas Central Zone branches here today.

He said the activities included disaster assistance, welfare programmes, youth and women development initiatives, and efforts to promote unity among Sarawak’s 34 ethnic groups.

Abdul Karim added that Saberkas’s management of programmes, finances, and member welfare has received recognition from various quarters, including youth organisations.

The Sarawak Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development said that Saberkas is not merely an ordinary youth organisation but stands out for its diverse membership and commitment to uniting people and developing youth leadership with a ‘Sarawakian outlook’ that serves all communities.

“Saberkas’ financial position remains stable and continues to improve annually through investments and prudent management, enabling consistent funding for branch activities,” he said.

Abdul Karim added that the Saberkas leadership must continue to strengthen organisational governance in view of the possible addition of new branches following changes to constituency boundaries this year.

He also expressed hope of seeing Saberkas have its own facilities in the future, including a building and a marching band, as symbols of the youth organisation's strength and identity.

At the event, Abdul Karim presented mock cheques totalling RM491,000 to 24 Saberkas Central Zone branches for organising various activities.
