KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 30 (Bernama) -- Prasarana Malaysia Berhad (Prasarana) today introduced the use of Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs) at high-traffic Light Rail Transit (LRT) stations as part of the company’s initiative to support the development of sustainable urban mobility.
Prasarana Group Chief Health, Safety, Security, Environment and Sustainable Development Officer Idzqandar Abu Bakar said the installation of RVMs at busy rail stations such as the Masjid Jamek Station and KLCC Station was in line with the Prasarana Sustainability Roadmap, which targeted a recycling rate of 30 per cent by 2030.
He said the technology provided a more convenient recycling facility, thereby encouraging recycling practices among public transport passengers and the urban community.
“This approach not only simplifies the recycling process, but also encourages positive behavioural change through smart technology and reward systems,” he said in a statement today.
Among the machines introduced is KLEAN, which is powered by artificial intelligence (AI) to accept plastic bottles and cans. Users who recycle these materials will receive reward points via the Klean mobile application, which can be redeemed for vouchers from selected partner merchants such as Zus Coffee, Grab and Jaya Grocer.
Also introduced was the ATLAS ECOPOD recycling machine, integrated with ATLAS Vending machines, enabling users to recycle and receive digital rewards that can be redeemed directly at the adjacent vending machines.
Both machines are equipped with data tracking systems to monitor user engagement and the volume of recyclable materials, thereby supporting the implementation of data-driven sustainability initiatives.
To date, 16 units of RVMs have been installed at facilities operated by Prasarana, including Menara Prasarana and the headquarters of Rapid Bus Sdn Bhd.
Prasarana also welcomed strategic collaborations and private sector sponsorships for the installation of RVMs at selected rail stations, in line with the aspirations of Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) towards a cleaner, greener and more sustainable city.
