Water, Energy Sectors Record Significant Achievements – Fadillah

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 29 (Bernama) -- The MADANI government, through the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), recorded significant achievements in strengthening the country’s water and energy sectors over the 2024–2025 period.

In a Facebook post, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the progress was achieved through strategic collaboration among multiple agencies and has contributed to improved public well-being, infrastructure security and the national sustainability agenda.

Fadillah, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, said that in the water sector, the Water Efficient Products Labelling Scheme (WEPLS) implemented by the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) resulted in water savings of up to 85 per cent.

He added that Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) operates more than 7,000 sewage treatment plants with effluent compliance exceeding 97 per cent, in addition to implementing fat, oil and grease (FOG) management programmes and the use of solar energy at sewage treatment facilities.

“The Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) has also implemented 149 flood mitigation projects, providing protection to 1.77 million residents, alongside river conservation and development initiatives nationwide,” he said.

The post was accompanied by two infographics detailing achievements in the water and energy sectors during the period.

Fadillah said Pengurusan Aset Air Bhd (PAAB) developed 21 water treatment plants with a total capacity of 2,081 million litres per day, and completed Phase 1 of the Langat 2 Project with a capacity of 1,130 million litres per day at a cost of RM4.2 billion.

In the energy sector, he said key achievements involved the Energy Commission (ST), the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) and MyPOWER, including the implementation of initiatives under the Malaysian Electricity Market Reform Roadmap.

SEDA recorded renewable energy capacity of 3,409.64 megawatts, while ST implemented the Large-Scale Solar 5+ programme with a capacity of 1,975 megawatts and facilitated the export of 50 megawatts of green electricity to Singapore.

The sector’s performance was also reflected in a reduction in the System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI) to 37.36 minutes.

At the regional level, Fadillah said the 43rd ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM) achieved key milestones with the launch of the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) 2026–2035 and the signing of several agreements related to the ASEAN Power Grid.

He said the achievements reflect the government’s continued commitment to strengthening national water and energy security in line with the Water Sector Transformation Roadmap 2040 (AIR2040) and the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR).

“These efforts directly support the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) agenda and the Net Zero Carbon Emissions target by 2050 for the well-being of the nation and future generations,” he said.
