28/12/2025 02:11 PM

GEORGE TOWN, Dec 28 (Bernama) -- The Sunat Perdana Programme, organised by the Penang Muslim League, highlighted efforts to preserve Penang’s heritage, delighting participating children with a special trishaw ride.

Penang Muslim League president Datuk Seri Haja Najmudeen Kader said the initiative aimed to help children feel at ease as they prepare for adulthood, while showcasing traditional transport as a cherished part of Penang’s heritage, ensuring it remains relevant over time.

“This annual programme involves 40 children aged between four and seven. In previous years, children were paraded on horseback, but trishaws were chosen this year as they represent Penang’s heritage.

“With George Town’s status as a world heritage site, we hope this iconic form of transport will continue to be recognised and not forgotten by future generations,” he told reporters when met at the programme here today, which was officiated by Deputy Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Lim Hui Ying.

According to Haja Najmudeen, 12 trishaws were arranged to take the children on a 200-metre ride along Jalan Kapitan Keling, after which they received a special ‘shower’ courtesy of the Fire and Rescue Department, followed by the circumcision ceremony at the Penang Muslim League building on Queen Street.

Meanwhile, Lim praised the Penang Muslim League’s initiative of using trishaws to create a cheerful atmosphere for children, helping to calm their nerves before circumcision.

The Tanjong Member of Parliament said the programme also reflected the spirit of togetherness, social concern and shared responsibility in maintaining the well-being of the community and expressed hope that it could continue to increase health awareness among people of all backgrounds.

“Programmes like this are also in line with the government’s efforts to strengthen the family institution and ensure that children’s well-being is always safeguarded, as they are the most valuable asset and the hope for the country’s future,” she said.
