KANGAR, Dec 18 (Bernama) -- Malaysians planning to visit Hat Yai have been advised to postpone their travel plans until the post-flood clean-up process in the Songkhla Province is completed and food premises and tourist attractions are fully reopened.
Malaysian Consul General in Songkhla Ahmad Fahmi Ahmad Sarkawi said that the process of cleaning up the damage caused by the floods is currently underway, and there are many trucks and heavy vehicles in Hat Yai for this purpose.
He said post-flood related diseases are also spreading, causing medical centres in Hat Yai to be very busy and with very little capacity to accept new patients.
"Many of the food premises and tourist attractions are still closed,” he said in a statement issued by the Perlis Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIPs) today.
According to the statement, Ahmad Fahmi shared the current situation in Hat Yai after receiving a mock cheque of RM5,000 from Ibnu Sabil MAIPs presented by the Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail, yesterday.
Earlier, the Raja Muda Perlis, accompanied by the Raja Puan Muda Perlis, Tuanku Dr Hajah Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil and their second child, Hajah Sharifah Farah Adriana Jamalullail, visited several severely flooded areas in Hat Yai, accompanied by Ahmad Fahmi.
Ahmad Fahmi said that the damage to public property caused by the floods in Hat Yai at the end of November is estimated to be around RM1.3 billion.
