KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 18 (Bernama) -- The Cabinet meeting yesterday decided that there would be no toll rate increase by 10 highway concessionaires in 2026, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
Fahmi, who is also the Unity Government spokesman, said although the decision would have financial implications, the cost would be borne by the government.
“The details will be explained later by the Works Ministry,” he told a weekly media briefing at the Angkasapuri Complex here today.
In another development, Fahmi said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had also stressed the need to expedite works to complete construction and provide medical equipment for the Sarawak Cancer Centre.
“Yesterday, we read reports that Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg also intends to channel a certain amount of funds to facilitate the acquisition of several specialised equipment items for the Sarawak Cancer Centre.
“So at the Federal Government level, the Prime Minister has requested that several matters be followed up by accelerating processes to expedite the completion of the Sarawak Cancer Centre,” he said.
Yesterday, Abang Johari was quoted as saying that the Sarawak government had agreed to add RM500 million for the purchase of medical equipment for the Sarawak Cancer Centre, bringing the total project financing to RM1.5 billion.
On March 30, 2024, Anwar announced that the Federal Government had agreed to implement the construction of the Sarawak Cancer Centre in the Samarahan Division.
Through the project, the Sarawak government made history as the first state government to advance funds for a Federal project to speed up its implementation.
Meanwhile, commenting on the flood situation, Fahmi advised the public to comply with and stay informed of weather warnings and the latest developments from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) to prepare for any possibility of flooding.
He said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had reminded the Cabinet yesterday that the fourth surge of the current Northeast Monsoon was expected to bring continued strong winds and heavy rain until March 2026.
