Uncleanliness In Selangor: State Govt Upholds Sultan’s Decree, Takes Immediate Action

16/12/2025 09:45 PM

SHAH ALAM, Dec 16 (Bernama) -- The state government upholds the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah’s decree, which emphasises concerns over cleanliness and waste management in several areas under the jurisdiction of local authorities (PBTs).

Local Government and Tourism Committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim said the Sultan’s remarks serve as a valuable reminder to the state government and PBTs that cleanliness should not be taken lightly, as it affects public well-being, the city’s image, public health, and the state’s reputation.

He said several short-term measures have been immediately strengthened, including comprehensive mapping and monitoring of waste hotspots, increasing collection frequency in high-density and high-traffic areas, improving coordination of bulky waste collection, enhancing field supervision, and deploying rapid response teams to address unexpected issues.

“The state government has also instructed that each waste hotspot have a clearly designated responsible party, be continuously monitored, and that follow-up action be taken in the event of recurring problems,” he said in a statement today.

Ng added that the state government is also finalising a comprehensive long-term plan, particularly regarding the implementation of solid waste management under the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007 (Act 672) in Selangor.

He said the plan includes the phased development of waste-to-energy (WTE) plants, including the WTE project in Jeram, Kuala Selangor, expected to begin operations in early 2026, and the WTE project in Tanjung Dua Belas, Kuala Langat, targeted for completion in December 2027.

“This initiative is part of the transition towards a more sustainable and integrated solid waste management system, in line with the implementation of Act 672,” he said.

Ng said that while the finalisation of Act 672 by the state government is pending, all PBTs have been instructed to optimise their existing powers, resources, and capabilities to ensure public cleanliness is maintained and does not disrupt the lives of residents.

In the same statement, he assured that all of Sultan Sharafuddin’s remarks would serve as a basis for continuous improvement by the state government, and that efforts would be intensified to ensure Selangor remains a clean, livable, and reputable state.

He said the cooperation of all parties, including PBTs, technical agencies, business premises, and local communities, is essential to achieving this objective.
