MELAKA, Nov 30 (Bernama) -- The Melaka branch of the Customs Department seized 850 boxes of cigarettes worth RM7.3 million, including duties and taxes, from a container at West Port, Klang, on Oct 31.
Deputy director Bakri Abd Rahman said that during the inspection at 12.05 pm, more than 9.7 million sticks of contraband cigarettes were found in the 850 boxes declared as furniture parts, with an estimated value of RM783,520 excluding duties and taxes.
“The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(a) of the Customs Act 1967,” he said in a statement today.
He urged those with information on smuggling activities to contact the Customs toll-free line 1-800-88-8855) or the nearest Customs office in any state.
