12/11/2025 05:52 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 12 (Bernama) -- The Parliament of Malaysia continues to champion women’s representation and inclusive decision-making, recognising diplomacy as an important tool in advancing dialogue and cooperation, said Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul.

He said governance is most effective when every voice is heard, adding that in recent years, Parliament has introduced a series of reforms, including the establishment of 10 bipartisan parliamentary select committees.

“These committees cover areas such as women, health, human rights, and international relations, all of which play a crucial role in ensuring that Parliament remains accountable and centred on the needs of the people,” he said in his speech at the networking lunch with Women Heads of Mission in Malaysia (WOHOMY) at Parliament here today.

Also present were Romanian Ambassador to Malaysia Nineta Barbulescu, who is also WOHOMY coordinator, chairman of the Special Select Committee on Women, Children and Community Development Yeo Bee Yin, women MPs, ambassadors and heads of organisations.

Johari said that inclusive governance begins with dialogue that embraces every voice, stressing that meaningful participation from all segments of society is the cornerstone of a robust and accountable parliamentary system.

“WOHOMY’s engagement highlights that women’s leadership is essential for equality and forms the foundation of national progress and resilience.

“Today’s programme provides a focused platform to discuss how to empower women, protect children, and create gender-responsive policies,” he added.

He also commended Yeo and the committee for their leadership in promoting these issues, noting that their efforts directly contribute to Malaysia’s Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those focused on promoting gender equality and strengthening institutions.

The networking session served as a platform for dialogue and the exchange of views on policies, strategies, and best practices to strengthen gender-responsive policies, empower women, protect children, and reinforce family institutions at both national and international levels.

The programme also featured interactive networking activities, including the ‘Diplomatic Connections: Business Card Challenge’, which aimed to foster closer relationships among women leaders in a friendly and informal setting.
