12/11/2025 05:48 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 12 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM), through the Social Institute of Malaysia (ISM), is currently conducting a Study on the Development of Competency Standards for Social Work Practice in Malaysia.

Its Minister, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, said the study, which is expected to be completed by 2027, is being conducted to strengthen the field of social work in the country.

She stated that this is important to uplift the social work profession so that every social worker is equipped with solid, highly ethical, and effective competencies in assisting the community in need.

"We want the field of social work in Malaysia to be recognised as a profession that is based on knowledge, data, and evidence, without losing the values of empathy and humanity," she said while speaking at the opening ceremony of the ISM Inspire 2025 Programme here today, which was also attended by ISM Director Norhaslinda Mohd Sibi.

The programme, themed 'Knowledge, Inspiration, Social', was organised by ISM to discuss current social issues in Malaysia.

Nancy said the programme's organisation is timely with the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13), which focuses on inclusive social well-being, and the National Social Policy (DSN) 2030, which aligns 44 main national social policies.

"These policies must be translated into concrete action. It is the government's commitment that must reach the people. All of you, youth, social workers, NGOs, and academia, are the government's partners in realising this so that it truly touches the lives of the people," she said.
