KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- Eight army veterans today began serving as hostel wardens at two MARA junior science colleges (MRSM) in Besut, Terengganu and Balik Pulau, Penang.
Malaysian Armed Forces Veterans Affairs Department (JHEV) director-general Maj Gen Datuk Semaon Marjuki said the appointments were a pilot initiative by Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) involving four men and four women who had passed the required tests and interviews.
“The experience, knowledge and character gained by veterans during their service can help shape the character of students in these full boarding schools.
“MARA is treating the posting of these eight veterans as a pilot test, and if it shows positive results, more army veterans will be appointed as MRSM wardens,” he told Bernama here today.
Semaon said more army veterans could potentially be appointed as wardens in boarding schools, following the example of the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan), which has already engaged more than 400 ex-servicemen as community rangers.
MARA chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki announced the pilot project last month.
In another development, Semaon said JHEV had recently held discussions with the Malaysia Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS), which is also looking into the possibility of employing army veterans under its force.
He said the proposal was still at the discussion stage as several aspects needed further study.
