KUALA LUMPUR, July 9 (Bernama) -- The proportion of Malaysians who believe the country is in decline has dropped by 12 per cent, reflecting a positive shift in public sentiment regarding the nation’s direction, according to market research firm Ipsos Sdn Bhd (Ipsos).
In a statement, Ipsos said that based on a survey of public opinion on the state of the country, the number of Malaysians who felt the nation was deteriorating fell to 40 per cent, compared to 52 per cent in 2023.
This figure is also lower than the global average of 57 per cent.
Despite this more progressive outlook, Ipsos noted that about two-thirds of Malaysians believed there was a significant societal divide and that the economic imbalance was skewed in favour of the wealthy and political elites.
“This sentiment highlights a potential push for social change and a need to rebuild trust in key institutions,” the statement said, adding that half of Malaysians believed the country needed a strong leader who was bold enough to take decisive action.
Ipsos also said Malaysia should be prepared to face potential disruptions as the world contended with growing uncertainty and emerging challenges.
“In these turbulent times, fostering social cohesion through effective leadership is essential to ensuring a stable future for all Malaysians,” it said.
