KUALA LUMPUR, July 8 (Bernama) -- The ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Interface Meeting with Representatives of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) will take place today, marking the start of the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM) and its related meetings.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan is expected to chair the meeting, having recently accompanied Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on his official visits to Italy, France, and Brazil.
In addition to ASEAN foreign ministers, the meeting will be attended by Timor-Leste's foreign minister, ASEAN's Secretary-General Dr Kao Kim Hourn, and the AICHR Representative.
The annual event, which forms part of the AMM, will discuss recent developments in the human rights landscape across ASEAN.
Mohamad will also chair the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ) Commission and is scheduled to lead the trilateral meeting with Norway and the ASEAN Secretariat later this evening.
According to Foreign Ministry secretary-general Datuk Sri Amran Mohamed Zin, the session will focus on reviewing progress in implementing the SEANWFZ Treaty’s Plan of Action.
Also on the agenda are discussions on the potential accession of Timor-Leste to the Treaty and the long-standing issue of securing the accession of the Nuclear Weapon States (NWS) to the Treaty’s Protocol.
In addition, the trilateral meeting between Malaysia, Brazil and the ASEAN Secretariat will be held, which will be attended by ASEAN senior officials and Deputy Secretary-General for ASEAN Political-Security Community Datuk Astanah Abdul Aziz.
The 58th AMM and related meetings, to be held under Malaysia’s 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship themed ‘Inclusivity and Sustainability,’ will feature 24 ministerial-level meetings, including engagements with ASEAN Dialogue Partners and Sectoral Dialogue Partners.
The high-level meetings, which will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) from July 8 to 11, will gather about 1,500 delegates.
These include foreign ministers from ASEAN member states, Timor-Leste, ASEAN Dialogue Partners, ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) participating countries, Sectoral Dialogue Partners and senior officials from the ASEAN Secretariat, of which several of them are scheduled to arrive today.
