KUALA LUMPUR, June 25 (Bernama) -- In conjunction with the recent World Environment Day, Maxis has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability and a greener future by reducing emissions and expanding the use of renewable energy across Malaysia.
In a statement today, Maxis highlighted its focus on incorporating environmental benefits into its network and operations, while also empowering consumers with greater access to green energy solutions.
It said that with a customer base of 10.4 million subscribers and 780,000 connected homes, the company is well-positioned to drive greater access to green energy across Peninsular Malaysia through its Maxis Home Solar solution.
“By offering robust customer support with a low upfront payment, Maxis empowers people to lower their carbon footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future while benefiting from reduced electricity costs,” the statement read.
Guided by ISO 14001 standards, Maxis implements annual reduction strategies to optimise energy use and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
Since 2023, the company has also begun integrating electric vehicles (EVs) into its field operations to support cleaner energy consumption and reduce its carbon footprint.
Maxis has also expanded its use of solar energy by installing EV charging stations at seven Technical Operations Centres (TOCS) and implementing off-grid solar systems at rural base stations nationwide to reduce reliance on diesel generators.
“Additionally, Maxis has improved energy efficiency at its base stations and TOCs by replacing old equipment and systems with updated ones.
“With the implementation of Centralised Self-Organising Network technology, unused equipment can be powered down, while high-efficiency rectifiers can reduce power loss and heat,” said Patrick Er, director of Maxis Green Solutions and Maxis’ chief people and transformation officer in the statement.
He added that by decommissioning old equipment and consolidating its core network, Maxis has optimised space and reduced energy use, limiting energy growth at network sites to just 0.25 percent despite network expansion and achieving lower emission intensity.
Maxis has been upgrading its facilities to lower office emissions, including the installation of LED lighting and cable enhancements, resulting in an 8 percent year-on-year reduction in 2024, as well as introducing public transport subsidies to encourage employees to reduce their carbon footprint.
"Maxis' sustainability efforts reflect its ongoing commitment to creating sustainable value. Looking ahead, Maxis remains dedicated to addressing climate change through ongoing initiatives to build a resilient and sustainable future for all,” the statement read.
Meanwhile, Patrick Er said managing environmental impact and improving operational efficiency are crucial to the long-term sustainability of the company, which has been operating for 29 years.
In addition to risk mitigation, these efforts also create added value for customers and stakeholders.
"Through solar initiatives for both our customers and operations, Maxis supports the National Energy Transition Roadmap towards achieving 70 percent installed renewable energy capacity by 2050," he said in the same statement.
