KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 (Bernama) -- Worldwide Entech Sdn Bhd is taking the lead in promoting Waste-to-Energy (WTE) technology as a pivotal solution in addressing Malaysia’s growing waste management and climate challenges.
Worldwide Entech general manager Danial Liew Jin Sheon said Malaysia generates over 38,000 tonnes of solid waste daily, with 137 landfills currently operational nationwide.
“However, only 21 are classified as sanitary, while the remaining 126 non-sanitary landfills continue to release untreated methane and leachate into the environment,” he said in a statement.
Recognising the urgent need for a scalable and integrated solution, Danial said Worldwide Entech, a subsidiary of Worldwide Holdings Berhad, is positioning WTE as a key innovation that reduces waste volume, mitigates climate impact, and contributes to national energy production.
“WTE technology offers a safe, clean method to convert residual, non-recyclable waste into electricity through controlled combustion.
“One tonne of waste processed in a WTE facility can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, particularly methane, which is 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide,” Danial said.
He noted that as part of supporting the 12th Malaysia Plan and the national target of achieving a 40 per cent recycling rate by 2025, the company also offers full-spectrum waste infrastructure solutions.
“This includes the design, construction, operation, and aftercare of sanitary landfills; leachate treatment plants to prevent groundwater contamination; landfill gas (LFG) recovery systems that reduce methane emissions and produce energy.
“It also includes rehabilitation of old dumpsites to meet environmental safety standards and waste transfer stations that improve efficiency and reduce emissions in logistics,” he said.
Despite its environmental benefits, Danial said WTE faces public misconceptions equating it to pollution-heavy incineration, a key barrier to broader public acceptance and policy acceleration.
To address this, Danial said Worldwide Entech is ramping up community engagement, environmental transparency, and public education to reshape perceptions of modern waste solutions.
To overcome this challenge, Danial said Worldwide Entech is intensifying community engagement, environmental transparency, and public education efforts to reshape how Malaysians view modern waste solutions.
“Worldwide Entech is helping redefine waste, not as a burden, but as a sustainable resource. By reimagining waste management through an integrated, forward-thinking lens, the company is laying the foundation for a more climate-resilient future.
“The modern WTE process is equipped with robust emission controls that comply with international standards. The emphasis on transparency and data reporting allows stakeholders to see the measurable benefits of WTE, from reduced landfill dependency to energy recovery.
Following Malaysia’s participation in Expo 2025 Osaka, Danial added that the focus on sustainability leadership and circular economy innovation reinforces how technologies like WTE could position the country as a regional front-runner in green infrastructure and environmental transformation.
