KUALA LUMPUR, June 10 (Bernama) -- The integration of technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) must be approached with caution and strong ethical awareness, especially among journalists, to safeguard the credibility of the profession, says Broadcasting Department (RTM) director-general Datuk Suhaimi Sulaiman.
He noted that while AI can significantly improve the speed and quality of news production, it must be used with a deep sense of responsibility.
“AI comes with a great responsibility, particularly when it involves ethics and legal considerations, especially as it relates to journalistic credibility,” he said when featured on Jendela Fikir, a Bernama Radio programme today, titled “HAWANA 2025: Upholding Ethics in the New Era.”
Citing RTM’s adoption of AI-driven news presenters, Suhaimi emphasised that every script broadcast by AI-generated newsreaders undergoes strict ethical screening.
“For example, RTM now uses AI robotic technology for news delivery, but all scripts are thoroughly vetted beforehand to ensure they align with our ethical standards,” he explained.
Suhaimi also urged journalists to fully understand the implications of AI use, including copyright issues, as well as the potential misuse of voices and images by irresponsible parties.
“When we step into new technologies, there are many unknowns. For instance, someone could alter a person’s image or voice using AI. Misuse is very possible.
“We cannot just use these technologies freely. We must ensure, for example, whether the voice being used requires permission or payment, and whether copyright laws apply,” he stressed.
In conjunction with the National Journalists Day 2025 celebration this weekend, Suhaimi also encouraged journalists to expand their skill sets and deepen their understanding of evolving technologies in order to produce meaningful news and programmes that contribute to nation-building.
Themed “Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics”, HAWANA 2025 will be held at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) from June 13 to 15, with the main event on June 14 expected to be graced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
More than 1,000 media professionals from Malaysia and abroad are expected to attend.
