23/05/2025 05:57 PM

JOHOR BAHRU, May 23 (Bernama) -- The free helmet exchange counter, a regular hit at the MADANI Rakyat (PMR) Programme, continues to attract crowds as the three-day Johor edition kicks off today at Toppen Shopping Centre here.

A Bernama check found that people began queuing as early as 9 am at the helmet exchange counter set up at the Road Transport Department (JPJ) booth on the shopping centre grounds.

M. Laksminarayanan, 30, said he and his brother, M. Tarmesvaran, 26, were happy to have the opportunity to exchange their old helmets for new ones at no cost through the programme.

“I found out about this programme on TikTok yesterday and it usually draws quite a crowd.

“So early this morning, my brother and I left home in Masai and braved the traffic just to be here,” he said.

Affendi Mohd Shah, 57, from Taman Universiti in Skudai, said he had travelled nearly an hour to be here, fulfilling his 18-year-old son Mohd Amir Danish’s wish to exchange his old helmet.

He also expressed satisfaction with the efficiency of the JPJ officers at the counter, describing the helmet exchange process as quick and hassle-free.

“All the JPJ officers are friendly and helpful, which makes things easier. I can also check traffic summonses and settle other matters while I’m here,” he said.

JPJ Corporate and Strategic Planning Division director Nor Azhar Manap said a total of 3,000 helmets were made available during the three-day programme.

“There are 1,000 helmets up for grabs today. Those interested must be Malaysian citizens, bring their MyKad, and are allowed to exchange one helmet each by bringing in an old one,” he said.

In addition, JPJ is offering a flat rate of RM150 for compound summonses involving Automated Safety Awareness System (AWAS) offences recorded from October 2018 until now.

The public can also renew their Competent Driving Licence (CDL), Probationary Driving Licence (PDL), vocational licences (PSV and GDL), and Motor Vehicle Licence (LKM) through the JPJ Mobile service.

The Johor PMR 2025, carrying the theme “Belia MADANI, Yakin Boleh!”, features a variety of exciting activities, including exhibition booths, interactive sessions with government agencies, career carnivals and MADANI sales.

The event is held in conjunction with the state-level National Youth Day celebration, making it a dual-purpose event to amplify the voices and potential of Malaysia’s youth.

The programme is expected to draw over 25,000 visitors and will be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at 3 pm today.

Johor is the second stop after Sabah (May 9–11) in this year’s PMR tour series, which will continue in Lumut (Perak), Kuala Terengganu (Terengganu), Kota Lama (Kelantan), Nilai (Negeri Sembilan), Baling (Kedah), Jasin (Melaka), and Bintulu (Sarawak).
