KAPIT, Dec 6 (Bernama) -- Sarawakians should reflect on the lessons of history to better prepare for the challenges of the modern era, said State Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
He said Sarawak’s past teaches the futility of internal conflicts, which only harm relationships and offer no benefits to communities.
“About 100 years ago, our forefathers faced intra-tribal conflicts and disputes over spiritual beliefs, including headhunting, social status, honour, territorial claims, and resource ownership. These led to endless, chaotic, and violent situations,” he said.
Speaking at an international seminar commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Kapit Peace-Making Ceremony today, Uggah recalled how peace initiatives like the Kapit ceremony helped end such hostilities.
"This historic event brought together leaders and warriors from various ethnic groups, including the Iban, Kayan, Kenyah, and Kajang communities from Sarawak and Kalimantan, to formally resolve conflicts," he said.
The Kapit peace-making ceremony, featuring symbolic exchanges and rituals, laid the foundation for peace, enabling social harmony, economic growth, and progress, Uggah said.
He stressed that unity remains vital as Sarawak navigates challenges like climate change, technological advancements, food security, and income inequality.
"It is fortunate that we have learnt to coexist peacefully, rejecting hatred and disunity. This gives us the strength, wisdom, and harmony to build a better future," he said.
He praised the inclusive policies of the Sarawak government under Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, which provide opportunities for all Sarawakians through initiatives like the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
Uggah also noted Sarawak’s ambitions in the green economy and partnerships with global players such as Japan and South Korea in renewable energy development, emphasising that unity is crucial for integrating into the global economy.
