TUMPAT, Dec 5 (Bernama) -- The Social Welfare Department’s (JKM) disaster relief supply depot in Kelantan will be improved from time to time, said Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.
She said that although the state currently has only one depot in Pengkalan Chepa, the ministry is committed to ensuring that all food aid and essential supplies are distributed to every temporary relief centre (PPS).
“We are aware of the concern regarding the lack of JKM depots, and we will address any shortcomings, including dividing the aid into different zones.
“So, there will be no issue of food supply shortage, and JKM will also increase the stock of essential items at the depot,” she told a press conference after visiting flood victims at the Sekolah Kebangsaan Seri Tumpat 2 PPS here today.
She added that aid distribution is continuously being improved to ensure food and essential supplies reach the PPS despite challenges such as cut-off roads.
Meanwhile, Nancy confirmed that some JKM personnel had also been affected by the floods.
“Therefore, those who worked during the first wave of floods are being given rest and will be replaced by other staff to prepare for the next wave,” she said.
She further said that 4,590 JKM staff nationwide, in collaboration with other agencies and volunteers, are involved in managing the needs of flood victims in the affected states.
Earlier, Nancy visited Fadiah Seman, 69, in Kampung Kuala Sat, Machang, to deliver aid following the loss of her husband, Shukarno Mahmood, 72, who drowned on Sunday morning.
Shukarno’s body was discovered about 100 metres from his home after his boat capsized due to strong currents while he was returning from checking on his livestock nearby.
