Musa Laid Firm Foundation For Medical Science, Engineering Studies - Usm

GEORGE TOWN, June 8 (Bernama) -- Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) expressed its condolences to the family of former USM vice-chancellor Tan Sri Musa Mohamad, also the former Education Minister, who died of blood cancer tonight.

USM said the services and contributions of Musa in the field of education were very significant, particularly to the university and throughout his time as the USM vice-chancellor from 1982 to 1995, he had also contributed to physical and academic development, including laying a firm foundation in medical science and engineering studies.

"The shifting of the Medical Science Studies Centre from the main USM campus to Kubang Kerian in Kelantan and the development of the engineering studies, including Aerospace Engineering also took place during his time as USM vice-chancellor.

"When he was the Education Minister from 1999 to 2004, he was responsible for the setting up of the Advanced Medical and Dental Institute (AMDI) USM in Bertam,” it said in a statement.

Musa, 81, breathed his last at 7.12 pm at a private medical centre in Petaling Jaya due to Multiple Myeloma (blood cancer).

The Bagan Datuk-born Musa was the first non-politician to hold the post of Education Minister from 1999-2004.

In addition to serving at USM, he also held several other important posts, including as president of the International Organisation of Ministers of Education from 2011 to 2003 and was also the former chairman of Multimedia University and chairman of UCSI University Council.
