KUALA LUMPUR, May 17 (Bernama) -- The Lembah Bujang Archaeological Site exhibition, featuring Augmented Reality (AR) technology curated by the Department of Museums Malaysia (JMM), is one of the highlights of the national-level International Museum Day (HMA) 2024, currently held at Dewan Sri Pinang, Padang Kota, Penang since Monday.
JMM director-general Datuk Kamarul Baharin A. Kasim said a total of 22 museums and 15 departments are participating in this year’s MHA, showcasing 37 exhibitions from across the country, as well as from Indonesia and Singapore.
They offer a variety of attractions aimed at engaging visitors throughout the nine-day programme, scheduled to conclude on May 22.
“Visitors have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the ambience of the archaeological site and engage in interactive observation of excavation activities through AR technology,” he told Bernama recently.
He said this year, JMM is also showcasing 25 types of artefacts and collections in archaeology, ethnology and natural specimens, including Martaban, Lembah Bujang beads, stone tools, shell remains, wooden book stands, and replicas of Gua Naga Mas fossils.
The theme, ‘Museum for Education and Research’, has been selected to bring communities closer to museums, facilitating a deeper understanding of their functions and fostering individual identity. It is set to be officiated by Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow tomorrow.
Among the activities available is the ‘Muzium Bersama Komuniti’ segment located at Seh Tek Tong Cheah Kongsi, Armenian Street, which takes visitors to places of worship of various religions, to provide an understanding of the diverse cultures and practices in the country.
According to Kamarul Baharin, another unique activity is the Museum Fun Walk themed ‘sleepwalking’ with a target of 3,000 participants and scheduled to be held at 7 pm on May 18.
“Participants will stroll 4.3 kilometres in pyjamas, starting from Taman Mulia to Taman Botani. Additionally, the HMA will also host Q&A sessions with curators and the community to expose the public to the diverse roles within museums.
“In the museum field, there are curators, designers, collectors and various other roles, but outsiders often only see exhibitions. So, they are not aware of the administrative work behind the scenes. This segment aims to cultivate their interest in understanding the scope of works in museums,” he said.
Apart from exhibitions, there are also seminars by international speakers from neighbouring countries such as the Malay Heritage Centre, Singapore, and the Indonesian Museum Association (AMI) Kalimantan.
The festival will also be enlivened by the performances of popular local celebrities such as Lah Ahmad, Akim, Douglas Lim and Faizal Tahir.
