ASIAN ULAMA COUNCIL PLAYS CRUCIAL ROLE IN PROMOTING MODERATION - DPM AHMAD ZAHID

KUALA LUMPUR, May 8 (Bernama) -- Asian Ulama Council plays a crucial role in promoting moderation by offering balanced interpretations of religious texts, advocating for tolerance and guiding believers towards a middle path that avoids extremism while emphasising spiritual balance.

During his special remarks at the Asian Ulama Council 2024, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the council also actively counters extremist ideologies and fosters social cohesion through dialogue and collaboration among diverse groups.

“Engagement with policymakers is vital to advocate for policies grounded in moderate Islamic values, aiming for inclusive and equitable societies.

“As we conclude this conference, let's recommit to upholding values of compassion, tolerance, and empathy in all interactions, serving as shining examples of the positive impact of dialogue and collaboration,” he said today.

The conference, organised by the Office of the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) and the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) in collaboration with the Muslim World League (MWL), was launched by Ahmad Zahid in the presence of MWL’s Secretary-General and Chairman of the Organisation of Muslim Scholars, Sheikh Dr Mohammad Abdulkarim Al-Issa.

The active participation, idea exchange and establishment of new connections during the conference underscore the potential of collaboration in addressing the global challenges that we have faced, said Ahmad Zahid.

He also urged the delegates to carry forward the spirit of cooperation and dialogue beyond the gathering, transcending borders to foster peace and mutual respect.

Ahmad Zahid said a regional action plan is crucial for promoting unity, and harmony as well as combating tyranny, oppression and hatred and the programme should facilitate discussions among scholars and leaders to achieve those goals.

Meanwhile, he said Malaysia is committed to developing Malaysia MADANI to ensure stability through values and unity among its diverse societies based on sustainability, compassion, respect, innovation, prosperity and trust.

He said those values are not just for Malaysians but universal aspirations for peace and harmony as unity among nations should go beyond borders.

“Ukhuwwah Islamiyah transcends borders, embracing racial and cultural differences without discrimination based on skin colour or language.

“Unity of thought, heart and action is crucial for stability and resilience. Our shared principles from al-Quran and as-Sunnah guide us toward seeking Allah's pleasure,” he said.

Ahmad Zahid also extended his sincere gratitude to Sheikh Mohammad for his invaluable support in organising the conference.

“I would like to express our deep gratitude and profound respect to all Asian ulama for your efforts and dedication in serving religion and society.

“We thank you for your dedication and sacrifices, and pray that Allah rewards you with the best of rewards and makes your deeds sincere for His noble countenance,” said Ahmad Zahid who congratulated the main organiser, Jakim and all those who have contributed to the success of the event.
