KUALA LUMPUR, May 7 (Bernama) -- The International Regulatory Conference (IRC) 2024, held today, underscores Malaysia’s commitment to maintaining leadership and staying abreast of developments in Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the ASEAN region.

Head of the Asia Pacific Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA), Julian Gorman, lauded Malaysia's efforts in organising the conference, which brought together regional leaders to discuss the crucial role of policy and regulation in AI advancement.

“More than five billion people in the world now own smartphones, and AI is now within reach for these individuals in a very meaningful way. Although AI has been present for a long time, it is changing the way we interact with each other and our surroundings.

“I believe it's crucial to ensure that individuals continue to develop their skills and receive education so that they can actively participate in the digital economy, which is being significantly accelerated by AI," he said, after participating as a panellist at the IRC, titled 'Shaping the Future of AI’, here, today.

He emphasised the importance of striking a balance between regulation and innovation, to ensure sustainable progress in AI development.

Gorman stressed the need for regulations to support innovation without unnecessarily stifling creativity, while also advocating for a review of existing regulations, to facilitate broader industry participation.

Telekom Malaysia (TM) chief network officer Mohamed Tajul Mohamed Sultan highlighted TM's proactive adoption of AI technologies, particularly through machine learning applications aimed at enhancing customer outcomes.

“We have implemented various use cases to continually improve our services and gather valuable customer feedback for further enhancements," Mohamed Tajul said, emphasising the importance of leveraging AI for continuous improvement.

Meanwhile, YTL Communications chief executive officer Wing K Lee shared insights into Malaysia's upcoming AI Cloud construction project, which aims to position the country as a regional hub for cutting-edge AI technologies, upon completion.

“The AI Cloud project, spanning 664 hectares in Johor, will house one of the world's most advanced supercomputers, the Nvidia Grace Blackwell-powered DGX Cloud, boasting processing power exceeding 300 exaflops,” he said, highlighting Malaysia's readiness to propel AI development to unprecedented levels.

Assistant director of AI Governance at the Infocomm Media Development Authority of Singapore (IMDA), Vanessa Wilfred, underscored Singapore's progress in AI development, citing the development of Sea-Lion, a large language model designed to facilitate natural language understanding and generation across Southeast Asian cultures.

“Sea-Lion represents Singapore's commitment to harnessing AI for diverse applications, including text-to-speech programmes tailored to regional languages and cultures,” Wilfred explained.
