KUALA LUMPUR, April 14 (Bernama) -- The Public Works Department (JKR) has identified a high volume of heavy vehicles that are over 20 tonnes as the cause of damage to the Bailey bridge at Section 102, Federal Route 12, Jalan Kuantan-Segamat in Pekan, Pahang.
In a statement tonight, JKR said the steel plate connecting the ramp to the road had been damaged, adding that the temporary bridge, built after the road was cut off due to floods, is only intended for light vehicles not exceeding the 20-tonne limit.
According to JKR, repair works on the bridge, opened to the public on Jan 7, can only be done after the festive season because it will involve closing off the entire road.
“At the same time, Pahang JKR has installed solar lights along the routes to enhance safety of users. All road users are requested to be patient, cautious and adhere to the speed limit,” read the statement.
JKR also urged users to comply with the load limits for the safety and comfort of all.
Earlier, a video showing the damage of the Bailey bridge causing traffic congestion went viral on social media.
Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said the construction of a permanent bridge to replace the temporary bridge will be brought to the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday.
