Over 6,000 Graduates To Receive Scrolls At 47th Upm Convocation

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 24 (Bernama) -- A total of 6,051 Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) graduates are set to receive their degrees and diplomas at the 47th UPM Convocation Ceremony from tomorrow until Nov 30, at the Dewan Besar, Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Cultural and Arts Centre in Serdang.

UPM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah said at the event, 520 graduates will receive the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree, Master's Degree (1,532), Bachelor's Degree (3,988) and diplomas (11).

He said UPM chancellor, Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, will present the scrolls to the recipients on the first day of the convocation, adding that a total of 328 graduates from various agricultural programmes are expected to receive their degrees and diplomas tomorrow.

Ahmad Farhan said Sultan Sharafuddin will also confer the Honorary Doctor of Finance award to Tan Sri Azman Hashim and the emeritus professor title to Datuk Dr Mad Nasir Shamsudin and Datuk Dr Abu Bakar Salleh, as well as to the late Datuk Dr Yaakob Che Man.

“Sultan Sharafuddin will present awards to university-level award winners such as the Chancellor's Gold Medal Prize to Sharifah Norziana Sayed Salleh from the Bachelor of Education (Guidance and Counselling) programme and the Royal Scholarship Award (Bumiputra) to Nor Izwan Hakimi Nor Azmi from the Bachelor of Biological Sciences programme with Honours.

“Other awards to be presented by His Highness are the Royal Education Award for non-Bumiputra to Ong Jia Xin of Bachelor of Science in Cell and Molecular Biology programme with Honours and Alumni Gold Medal to Tan Pei Qin of Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology programme with Honours,” he said in a statement.

Apart from that, Sultan Sharafuddin will also present the Pak Rashid Foundation Gold Medal to Dr Aniisah Khoirunnisaa' Pg Kamaluddin (Bachelor of Agricultural Science), Putra Agribio Medal to Muhammad Maleq Isqandar Nor Jalal (Bachelor of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering with Honours), and Razlan Putra Medal to Jonathan Nyepa from Bachelor of Science (Human Resource Development) programme.

Meanwhile, the Shell Tiram Wawasan Entrepreneurship Award will be presented to Hoh Jia Da (Bachelor of Software Engineering) and the Tun Abdul Razak Award to Nur Fatihah Ahmad (Bachelor of Education Guidance and Counselling).

Other awards are Malaysian Vaccines and Pharmaceuticals Doctor of Philosophy Gold Medal, to be presented to Dr Nur Syahirah Wahid (PhD Applied Mathematics), Master's Gold Medal With Thesis to Islam Md Tariqul (Master of Tourism Science), Doctor of Philosophy BasNet Gold Medal to Dr Latif Badar (PhD Accounting) and the Syed Kechik Award to Ahmad Safwan Hazim Aminudin (Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences with Honours).

Ahmad Farhan said UPM has also introduced new university medals including the Farm Fresh Food Security Award (Bachelor of Agricultural Science graduate, Ummu Qatrunnada Liyana Kamarudin), Sultan Idris Shah Endowment Award (Bachelor of Business Administration graduate, Nurul Syazwani Muhamed Zabidi) and Shell MyDinar Award (Bachelor of Agriculture (Livestock Science) graduate, Nur Aina Amirah Azmi).

Meanwhile, several national athletes will also receive their scrolls at the convocation namely Jonathan Nyepa (athletics), Zaidatul Husniah Zulkifli (athletics), Zaidatul Husna Zulkifli (athletics), Eng May Xin Winnie (athletics), Muhammad Ameer Nasrun Zulkeffli (rugby), Muhammad Azwan Zuwairi Mat Zizi (rugby) and Karishma S. Loganathan (netball), he added.

UPM pro-chancellor Raja Muda Selangor Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah will grace the third session of the convocation on Nov 27, while the other two pro-chancellors, Prof Emeritus Tan Sri Dr Syed Jalaluddin Syed Salim will attend the Nov 26 session and Prof Emeritus Datuk Dr Muhamad Zohadie Bardaie the three remaining sessions on Nov 28, 29 and 30.

Tengku Amir Shah will also award the emeritus professor title to Datuk Dr Abdul Jalil Nordin, Dr Jinap Selamat and Dr Robiah Yunus.

“Some of the programmes at this year’s convo festival that will be held from Nov 24 till 30 are the sale of the agricultural saplings and products such as durian, sun melon, MD2 pineapple, chilli, mini eggplant and mushroom as well as livestock, apart from opening the  Putra Agricultural Clinic,” he added.
