Floods: Number of evacuees drops in Johor, rises in Sarawak

JOHOR BAHRU, March 18 (Bernama) -- The flood situation in Johor continues to show improvement as the number of evacuees housed at temporary relief centres (PPS) dropped further tonight.

The State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) said as of 8 pm, 19,041 people were still taking shelter at 75 PPS, compared to 20,107 people at 77 PPS at 4 pm.

“Two PPS were shut down today, namely at Masjid Lapis Parit Bangas in Sri Medan and Sekolah Agama Seri Laksana in Semerah, both in Batu Pahat,” it said in a statement.

JPBN said Batu Pahat still has the highest number of evacuees with 19,039 people from 5,423 families, while Segamat involved two people from one family.

All districts were reported to have a clear sky tonight, except in Muar, which was cloudy. Also, no rivers recorded a reading above the danger level.

Meanwhile, in SARAWAK, the number of flood victims relocated to PPS in Kuching rose to 241 people from 68 families tonight, compared to 160 people from 41 families in the afternoon.

The JPBN Secretariat reported that 144 people from 31 families were taking shelter at the PPS at Dewan Sinar Budi Baru, while 97 people from 37 families were at Dewan Stapok Batu Kawa.
