02/12/2022 10:05 PM

KUALA SELANGOR, Dec 2 (Bernama) -- The Selangor Zakat Board (LZS) today channelled zakat contributions of RM2.8 million to the Patients Welfare Fund (TKPH) in hospitals and medical institutions as well as therapy centres for persons with disabilities (PWD) around Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.

LZS chief executive officer Mohd Sabirin Mohd Sarbini said of the amount, RM2.1 million was distributed to the TKPH in 15 hospitals and medical institutions, with each receiving an allocation ranging from RM20,000 to RM300,000.

The balance of RM665,000 was distributed to 22 therapy centres for PWDs, each receiving a sum of between RM20,000 and RM50,000.

Mohd Sarbirin said donations in the form of grants to TKPH have been earmarked since 2008 to ease the burden of needy Muslim patients who require funding to undergo hospital treatment.

“As for donation to PWD therapy centres, which were allotted since 2018, this grant is for management and development of education for those who are autistic, hyperactive, slow learners, with Down Syndrome and speech problems,” he told reporters here.

The zakat was handed over by LZS chairman Tan Sri Syed Anwar Jamalullail to representatives of hospitals, medical centres and PWD therapy centres at Hospital Al-Sultan Abdullah, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) in Puncak Alam today.

Mohd Sabirin said TKPH donations can be used to pay outstanding treatment bills, especially for asnaf patients in the ‘gharimin’ (debtor) category who are undergoing treatment and cannot afford to pay their bills.

For PWD therapy centres, the zakat donations are to help disabled students receive a proper education.

“It (amount of donation) varies according to the institution because some take in (disabled students) at the primary or secondary school level, and their treatment methods differ according to their needs,” he said.
