PADANG BESAR, Aug 11 (Bernama) -- In line with the declared upgrading of the Border Regiment Battalion (BRS) to Standard Infantry Battalion (BIS), the Malaysian Army will raise its capability in safeguarding and defending the country’s security.
Army chief, General Tan Sri Zamrose Mohd Zain said this was in line with raising its combat capability and enhancing its equipment including personal and support weapons to complement BIS.
“The changes are aimed at enabling the Border Regiment to conduct its moves in operations within and outside the country in the same way as the other standard infantries (Royal Malay Regiment and Royal Rangers Regiment).
“We will improve the weaponry, for example, the Askar Wataniah (Territorial Army) Regiment which was previously using the M16 will be given the M4.
“Besides that, the Border Regiment soldiers will attend various expertise courses in handling and managing weapons,” he said at the parade and declaration of BIS from BRS at the 30th Brigade headquarters at Bukit Chowder Camp, here, today.
The ceremony also saw the pinning of ranks on 611 promoted BIS members of other ranks in line with the organisational change that is taking place.
Zamrose said the infrastructure of the Malaysian Army camps would be upgraded in phases based on the BIS standard where the provision of training facilities and family housing would be made from time to time.
