KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Agriculture, Horticulture and Agro-tourism Exhibition (MAHA) 2022, to start this Thursday, will see the Malaysian Department of Fisheries (DOF) showcasing innovations in the fisheries sector at the “Laman Agro-Food Pertanian” site.

DOF director-general Mohd Sufian Sulaiman said among them is the Sea of Life Gallery which will display concepts on management of various ecosystems at the event to be held at the Malaysian Agricultural Expo Park (MAEPS), Serdang.

"Exhibition on fisheries conservation efforts,  such as artificial reef, turtles and endangered species is one of the activities planned in an effort to spread the importance of conservation to the public.

"The Igloo Showcase at the Sea of Life Gallery is a 3D underwater interactive activity that will give visitors a special experience," he told Bernama.

There will also be a Fisheries Innovation Gallery which will showcase projects under the mechanisation nd automation programme to help ease the workload of fishermen, especially those involved in shellfish catching.

He said the gallery will showcase more than 10 new creations, among them the Ergo Cockles Harvester and the Hydro Cockle Sorter.

Catching cockles involves the use of manpower and physical strength, therefore the innovation of the Ergo Cockles Harvester is perfect for the purpose, he adde..

As for the Hydro Cockle Sorter, he said, it can be installed in a fishing boat to facilitate the sorting process so that the clams can be sold easily.

"Usually the clams can only be separated after the fishermen go ashore and that is a waste of time. With the Hydro Cockle Sorter, fishermen can directly sell the cockles that have been processed on the boat itself," he said.

`Other galleries from DOF at MAHA 2022 include 'Tuna in the House', River Fish Sanctuary, Aquatic Science World, Aquaculture Technology, Ornamental Fish, Enforcement, Aquarius, myGAP Freshwater Fish Cages and myAgroprenuer.

To attract visitors to Maha 2022 there will be eight agricultural sites covering fishery, padi, livestock, herb and vegetables, fruits, pineapple, machinery and floriculture.

Themed ‘Food Security for the Future’, Maha 2022 has several new approaches involving mechanisation, the Internet of Things (IoT) and new technologies to improve productivity.
