KUALA BERANG, 28 Julai (Bernama) -- The three-day Tasik Kenyir Jet Ski Championship 2022 which started yesterday after the last time it was held in 2009 is expected to draw in 15,000 tourists.

Terengganu Tourism, Culture and Digital Technology Committee chairman Ariffin Deraman said the state government was very satisfied with the organisation of the world-class extreme sports event which was deemed successful in achieving the goal of empowering sports-based tourism (sports tourism) in the state.

As such, he said the championship will be made an annual event in the state's tourism calendar to promote Tasik Kenyir (Kenyir Lake) internationally.

"This jet ski sport is not only unique, but has its own followers all over the world.

"Therefore we (the state government) want to bring a world-class motorised water sports experience to Terengganu to boost the sports-based tourism sector which has yet to be fully explored," he said after the launch of Tasik Kenyir Jet Ski Championship 2022 by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar at Pulau Poh, Tasik Kenyir today.

The championship, which offers total prize money of RM60,000, has attracted 100 participants including from Thailand, Brunei, Singapore, Jepan and ndonesia.

In another development, Ariffin said the construction of an eight-storey hotel with 150 rooms on Pulau Poh will also be completed by December.

He said, when the hotel opens, more tourists will flood Tasik Kenyir thus providing an economic spillover to the people in the Kuala Berang area.

"Many more activities and facilities are in the works to make Pulau Poh a preferred tourist destination, including an extreme sports centre and a water theme park," he said.
